Cultivation Techniques of Grafted Rootstocks of Watermelon

1. Suitable for rootstock materials are black squash, black pumpkin, gourd and so on.

2. At present, three methods of grafting are used, namely, docking, splicing and plugging.

3. Grafting should first cultivate age-appropriate grafted seedlings (ie watermelon seedlings - scions and rootstock seedlings). Using the method of connection should be sowed in advance 4-5 days of seedlings; using splicing or plugging method, should be the first sowing rootstock seedlings 5-7 days. When grafting, the scionling seedlings should be flattened to the broken heart, and the first true leaf should be grown on the rootstock seedlings.

4. Whether grafted seedlings survive or not is related to the appropriate management measures within a few days after grafting. The key is to close the seedbed within 3-4 days after grafting, so that the temperature in the bed can reach 28°C during the day and 18°C at night, and the air humidity in the bed can reach 95%-lOO%. Avoid direct sunlight during the day.

5. Pay attention to timely kill the axillary buds of the rootstock.

6. Do not grow too deeply when growing grafted seedlings, so that the roots of watermelon seedlings do not contact with the soil to produce adventitious roots and lose the significance of grafting.

7. Since the rootstock has a strong ability to absorb fertilizer and water, it is necessary to pay attention to the appropriate reduction in the amount of fertilizer and water used in the management before sitting and fruiting, and strictly perform pruning.
