The butterfly's eyes contain special nanostructures that sense multispectral information and provide near-infrared and color information. Using a similar setup, the researchers combined various nanoscale structures with a range of optoelectronic devices to create a new camera. The camera can simultaneously record conventional color images and near-infrared signals. It is not only small in size, low in cost, but also insensitive to temperature changes and has low illumination requirements. The researchers tested in mice and breast cancer patients. The results show that the camera can not only find breast cancer tumors, but even pick up signals below the surface of the tissue, allowing doctors to find the tumor site through the skin.
Researchers say that the cost of a new camera-mounted goggles is about $200, far less than the current tens of thousands of dollars of infrared imaging equipment, and there is a lot of room for application in medical imaging.
