Interview with the father of "Dabai": Dabai is not a dream, human beings can't stop the robot from getting bad.

You may not know who Chris Atkeson is, but you must know who the "big white" is. With a sleek and lovely appearance, the heart of a gentle angel, the big white (baymax) in the movie "Super Marines" has recently become a household name.

It is said that the film originated from life, and the inspiration for the design was from Professor Atkinson and his laboratory.

Chris Attson is a professor at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute and previously taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His lab is currently working on Soft Robotics and is working hard to implement the "big white" robot as early as possible. They also set up a crowdfunding project to achieve Dabai (buildbaymax.org) in China and North America.

Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Academy is the world's largest robotics college and one of the few universities with independent robotics colleges. The college has a number of star-rated alumni, including Chris Umson, the founder of Google's driverless car project, Boris Sofman, co-founder of smart car development platform Anki, Mark Palatucci and Hanns Tappeiner, and NASA. "Curiosity" Mars probe astronaut Mark Maimone.

From last year's "Interstellar" robots with excellent cognitive abilities, to the warm-hearted robots in "Super Marines", the film gave us all the good vision of artificial intelligence. In reality, domestic and foreign technology giants have announced the need to deploy artificial intelligence. Baidu founder Li Yanhong proposed the "Chinese brain" plan in this year's "two sessions", and Google also promised to realize driverless cars within five years. Tesla CEO (CEO) Elon Musk even said in public that the threat of artificial intelligence will come within five years.

So, to what extent has artificial intelligence been developed at this stage, can we realize the dream of having a big white in the rest of our lives, and does Musk’s artificial intelligence threat really come?

With these questions, the Morning Post reporter interviewed Professor Chris Attson.

"Big White" will spread to everyone

Oriental Morning Post: Dabai is a soft robot, and many young people in China now love it. In your opinion, what is the benefit of Dabai's popularity? It is said that its design is inspired by you?

Attxon: Disney has given some human character to the white, which makes the audience like it, and it looks friendly. In fact, I think everyone should recognize the role of Dabai.

In 2011, Don Hall, one of the co-directors of the Super Marines, visited my lab at Carnegie Mellon University and saw the inflatable arm we made. At the time we were working on a technology that wanted to create a "soft and safe robot" that we hope will one day care for our parents and dress them. And when we are old, it can take care of us like this. Tang was inspired by this visit, which created his own mind, a personal health care inflatable robot that can accompany people.
