Japan has successfully cultivated a cow against mad cow disease through genetic technology

A joint research team formed by Japan Kirin Brewery and a U.S. company has successfully cultivated a cow against mad cow disease through genetic technology.
The cause of mad cow disease is an insoluble variant protein that deposits in the brain and forms a spongy tissue. This protein is called Prion and its normal form is not harmful to health, but variant forms can cause spongiform encephalopathy. According to the “Yomiuri Shimbun” reported on the 31st, the researchers used genetic technology to develop a bovine raw without Prion protein, so there is no possibility of infecting mad cow disease. The researchers also plan to use this cow to produce antibodies to treat hepatitis C, pneumonia, and rheumatoid arthritis in order to develop new drugs.
Although cattle infected with mad cow disease can also produce antibodies needed in pharmaceutical products, it is easy to give consumers a bad impression. At present, researchers from Kirin Brewery are studying how to use anti-mad cow cattle to produce large quantities of antibodies used in medicines. According to relevant sources, researchers have not yet planned to popularize cows against mad cow disease as carnivorous cattle.
