I want to have a cup of coffee after smoking? Smoking will allow you to drink more caffeine, perhaps by changing your metabolism, so that it can break down caffeine more quickly, allowing you to drink more to achieve the same feeling.

This is the result of a study by Marcus Munafo and colleagues at the University of Bristol, UK, who studied the attractiveness and eating habits of about 250,000 people.

When it comes to smoking, it is difficult to do randomized controlled trials (the most rigorous scientific trials) because it is not ethical for a group of randomly selected people to smoke. The next best approach is to study the massive health data biobank. These biobanks contain information about people's genes, diets and lifestyles.

To explore the relationship between smoking and drinking coffee, Munafo and colleagues analyzed data on five species of suffering in the UK, Norway and Denmark. They are particularly interested in inheriting a genetic variant that increases the frequency of smoking.

The team found that people who had this genetic change would drink more if they smoked. The British who have this genetic change will drink more tea, but the Danes and Norwegians who have the genetic changes will not. This may be due to cultural differences, Munafo said. "Norwegian and Danish people are not connected to tea like the British."

This genetic variation seems to affect how much nicotine a person smokes. You may have 0, 1 or 2 copies of this genetic variant, and each additional copy will increase your smoking per day. Each copy seems to make an extra 0.15 cups of coffee a day.

"You can infer from this that if you smoke 10 more cigarettes a day than another, you might get 1 and a half more coffee a day," Munafo said. However, he also said that the amount of nicotine absorbed by a person from a cigarette depends on the type of smoke he smokes and how he smokes.

The genetic variant assigns a genetic code to a nicotine receptor that is known not to interact directly with caffeine. This indicates that smoking increases coffee consumption, rather than drinking coffee to increase smoking.
