Most antibiotics are extracted from soil bacteria, but it is now increasingly difficult to find new structural compounds from these soil bacteria. There are a large number of different microorganisms in the human body, collectively referred to as microbial populations, and the nasal cavity is no exception. There are about 30% of the human nasal cavity with Staphylococcus aureus, and the remaining 70% of humans are able to resist the invasion of the bacteria, which has been uncertain.

Human commencals producing a novel antibiotic impair pathogen colonization published in the journal Nature today shows that a bacterium found in human nasal cavity can produce Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin- Antibiotics for resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA). The discovery helps develop new therapies to treat difficult bacterial infections.

Andreas Peschel of the University of Tübingen in Germany and colleagues reported that they found an antibiotic called Lugdunin, the first known case of a new class of peptide antibiotics. Lu Dengsu is produced by Staphylococcus lugdunensis, which is found in the nostrils. The researchers have shown that it can be used to treat S. aureus skin infections in mice.

They showed that Lu Dengsu showed strong antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive bacteria (including MRSA) and was not susceptible to resistance in S. aureus. The researchers also examined nasal swabs (nasal secretions) of 187 inpatients and found that the proportion of S. aureus infected with Staphylococcus aureus was 5.9% in the case of Staphylococcus aureus. Among the patients, the ratio was 34.7%. These data demonstrate that Staphylococcus aureus seems to help inhibit Staphylococcus aureus in the human nasal cavity.

Given the small number of new antibiotics under development, this study may have some therapeutic implications and highlight the value of human microbes as a potential source of new antibiotics.
