Morphological characteristics
Herbs perennial, high 0.6--1.5m. The roots are usually two parallel, spindle-shaped or obovate, dark brown skin; cultivation of lateral roots are very large, diameter of 5 cm. Stems erect or slightly inclined, cylindrical, green-blue on the surface, short hairs on the upper part or a few scattered appressed pubescence, purplish on the lower old stems, smooth and glabrous on the lower part of the stem. Leaves alternate, leathery, pentagonal, 6--11 cm long, 9-15 cm wide, palmately 3-lobed, central lobe diamond-shaped, cuspidate, subpinnately split, lateral lobes ranging from 2-lobed, each Slit edges have coarse teeth or nicks. Racemes narrow and long, densely recurved pilose; sepals 5, ca. 2 cm wide, bluish-purple, upper gills high-helmeted, 2--2.6 cm high, lateral sepals 1.5--2 cm long; petals 2, glabrous, Long claws, 1--2.5 mm long; stamens numerous; carpels 3--5, free. The lingling fruit is about 2 cm long. Flowering from September to October, fruiting period from October to November. Located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, north to the Qinling Mountains and eastern Shandong Province, south to the northern part of Guangxi Province. Born in mountain slopes or shrubs; mostly cultivated.
